Canon IXUS 870 IS photo gallery

Canon IXUS gallery : Just before my departure to the Photokina show, various test cameras arrived at my door. That means making product shots, charging batteries and cramming them into my already overfull suitcase with all the things I need for the Photokina show. For me as press member, Photokina means more than just visiting the many booths; I am also there to maintain contact with relations we have within the digital imaging industry. For me the day does not end when the Photokina closes its doors at the end of the day, that bit may be clear. In between, I will test the new Canon IXUS 870IS and make some sample pictures with it. The 4x wide angle zoom lens with 3 inch display is the most striking detail on the Canon IXUS 870 IS.

Besides that, a Canon IXUS always stands out through its design; an IXUS owes it to its name. But of course it is not all about appearance. This makes the built-in DIGIC 4 image processor one of the main features with which Canon shows that image quality is taken seriously, design or no design. The DIGIC 4 was introduced for the first time with the EOS 50D and EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera, and besides that can be found in cameras such as the Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS.

Motion Detection Technology
Canon’s improved Motion Detection Technology delivers fantastic, sharp results by registering camera and subject movement, then automatically adjusting ISO to prevent image blur. Blur is further guarded against by new Servo AF, which continuously adjusts focus on subjects moving towards or away from the camera. DIGIC 4 also powers Canon’s new i-Contrast feature, which brings out great, natural-looking detail in dark areas of pictures – without blowing out lighter areas.

The Canon IXUS 870 IS digital camera is on my priority list to be reviewed soon. In addition to the test in practice at which operation and functionality of the camera are evaluated together with the captured photos, the technical camera test in our DIWA Lab is crucial to come to a balanced final conclusion. The Canon IXUS test photos were taken with a full production model which means that this camera is equal to the model that the consumer can expect to purchase. The Canon IXUS 870IS test photos were taken in Cologne, Germany. The thumbnail sized pictures have been reduced to enable correct reproduction and compressed to ensure a faster loading time. The large images are the original, unedited Canon IXUS 870 IS sample photos.

[update] Police in Lancashire defend officer in clash with photographer

Posted in March 6th, 2008
Published in Digital, Photo

A police community support officer (PCSO) denies ordering a photographer to delete all his pictures, but admits asking him to delete one after he ‘sneaked up’ behind her.

Photo enthusiast John Kelly says he was left humiliated and feeling like a criminal after a PCSO ordered him to delete his pictures В– telling him he first needed permission before taking photographs of people in public.

The incident took place in Blackpool, Lancashire on 8 February.

However, today Blackpool police gave the officer’s version of events.

Speaking on behalf of the PCSO, Sergeant Rick Irving told us that the officer claims she requested, rather than demanded, Kelly delete one of his pictures В– an image showing the officer in the frame.

‘She is aware that she has no legal right to demand that he delete the photographs,’ Irving told us.

‘She asked him to delete one photograph which he has done. But she says she didn’t ask him to delete any others.’

Irving said that while the officer is aware of a person’s right to take pictures in a public place he said it would have been courteous to ask the PCSO: ‘Look, this is what I am doing В– can I take your photograph?’

The unnamed PCSO claims that Kelly was ‘evasive’ when asked to produce identification showing him to be a photographer.

Kelly, an amateur photographer who had been using a non-professional Nikon D40 digital SLR camera, hit back at the police’s response to the incident.

‘They have tried to make me out as some sort of villain,’ he told us this afternoon.

Kelly denies he was being evasive towards the officer.

‘She didn’t ask me for ID… I explained why I was taking photographs… for a competition.’

Sergeant Irving continued: ‘She [the PCSO] just says his general manner was a little bit strange. She felt a little bit uneasy with the way he was taking a photograph of her.’

When challenged by magazine regarding the rights of photographers to take pictures in public, Irving declined to discuss the matter further, stressing that the PCSO did not want to have her picture taken.

‘The fact that you are in a uniform doesn’t really change how you are as a human beingВ… your own personal wish to remain anonymous.’

Irving said the officer concerned will not face disciplinary action as a result of the incident.

Last week we reported that a picture that had inadvertently remained in Kelly’s camera was used by police to help identify the officer at the centre of the controversy.

Kelly is so incensed about the matter he has written to Michael Jack – MP for Fylde, Lancashire.

He tells us that his local television station has used his photos on 14 occasions to accompany weather reports on ITV’s programme.

Olympus E3 preview at DigIT

Olympus E3 preview at DigIT : Our good friend and DIWA member Kai Thon from the Norwegian website DigIT.no has published his preview of the new Olympus E-3 digital SLR camera. Kai was also invited by Olympus to come over to Istanbul for a hands-on with the Olympus E3 camera. Unfortunately I just arrived on the day Kai was leaving. At this event Kai and other journalists got an almost full production model of the Olympus E-3 DSLR and he was able to test it under various circumstances. Kai already received a full production model (firmware 1.0) so it will take not that much time before we can read Kai’s final conclusion! For now Kai published an in-depth preview of the Olympus E3 Four Thirds System digital SLR camera ,enjoy the read!
According to Kai Thon: “Although the E-3 has obvious resemblance to the E-1 in terms of design, it has several vital improvements. The most noticeable is the flip-out and twistable LCD screen, just like on many compact cameras. This is, of course, a major advantage on a camera that offers a real-time screen image, known as Live View. Although some competitors have LCDs with wide viewing angle, there is little doubt that a rotating screen provides the optimum viewing image when shooting near the ground or high above the head.”

Olympus E3 Four Thirds System camera – Image stabilizer
Kai Thon continues: “The image stabilizer in the E-3 is of the sensor shift type. It moves the sensor in all directions by use of ultra wave micro motors. Olympus claims that it may compensate movements comparable to 5 EV, though only under optimum conditions. A smart detail in the E-3 is the ability to see the effect of the image stabilizer during Live View by holding the IS button pressed. Although the cameras available in Istanbul had an unfinished version of the camera firmware (v.0.9), the E-3 delivered dynamic images with modest image noise and perfect exposure.” You want to learn more about the Olympus digital SLR camera? Canon recall 1D Mark III models

Posted in November 10th, 2007
Published in Photography News

In the digital SLR camera, EOS-1D Mark III that was launched in May this year, Canon has found that some cameras have an adjustment problem with the mirror for AF. The adjustment problem means for the affected products that the focus is not stable or that the Auto Focus tracking is not right when using the AI servo continuous shooting under high temperatures in particular.

The news comes after a letter, written by Canon’s Special Retail Channel director Lee Bonniface, was discovered to be circulating the net. The letter states that quality defect with some EOS-1D Mark III units in the market had been discovered, and asks retailers to recall all unsold models of the camera.

Canon EOS 1D MarkIII

The models thought to be affected are those with serial numbers between 501001 and 546561. If you have already purchased a 1D – Mark III, check the bottom of the camera to see if your model may be affected.

Canon will be offering free of charge repairs for those who have purchased a faulty model which will start at the end of November.
