Met police take over В‘MI6′ camera probe (update)
Police have stepped up their investigation into how a camera, reported to contain sensitive information and images relating to terror suspects, ended up on eBay.
The Metropolitan Police, Britain’s biggest police force, has taken over the investigation from Hertfordshire Police which originally handled the case.
‘We can confirm that Hertfordshire Police has passed the information to us which is being investigated,’ a Met spokesman told this afternoon.
A spokesman for Hertfordshire Police said that the case had been passed to the Met because it tends to ‘take the lead’ on national matters.
The Met said it was still too early to give any news on progress.
A member of the public alerted police in Hemel Hemsptead after buying the digital compact camera on eBay for £17.
Last week police distanced themselves from press reports that the camera may have belonged to an agent for MI6, the secret intelligence service.
The Met spokesman today said that the force could not discuss whether it was liaising with intelligence services as part of its investigation.
The camera is reported to contain al Qaeda suspects’ fingerprints and academic records.
Pictures of rocket launches and missiles were also reportedly stored on the memory card, according to media reports.
