Kodak's New Sensor Debuts in Budget Camera
Kodak’s breakthrough image sensor for digital cameras will first see the light of day in a low-price camera for novice photographers. The company announced Tuesday that the new Kodak C513 would be the first camera to use their new sensor, which specializes in improving low-light photographs.
“Traditionally, CMOS has allowed for lower cost camera design but was not able to provide top image quality,” said John Blake, general manager of Kodak’s digital division. “Kodak has changed that dynamic with the introduction of a digital camera at a remarkably affordable price without compromising image quality or camera function.”
The $79.95 C513 is a no-frills point-and-shoot camera with a 5.0 megapixel CMOS sensor, 3X optical zoom, 2.4-inch LCD display and digital image stabilization. It comes with 16MB of onboard RAM, and an SD expansion slot to provide the real storage. Power for the camera comes from trusty (if bulky) rechargeable AA batteries. Kodak says it will be available in August.

Olympus E-410 Review at PhotographyBLOG
PhotographyBLOG has a review of the Olympus E-410 and writes, “most of the audience for this camera will likely be upgrading from a point and shoot compact and therefore in the main wanting to shoot portraits of family and friends with a bit more вЂ?pep’. It’s in this area that the Olympus E-410 excels, delivering sharp, flattering portraits with vividly healthy skin tones. Distortion aside, the lens is capable of delivering commendably sharp images to boot.”
Yahoo Photos Nixed in Favor of Flickr
The on-going battle between photo-sharing Web sites has produced its next casualty. Yahoo announced on Thursday that it will be closing Yahoo Photos in favor of Flickr, the Web 2.0 photo site which that the company snapped up in 2005.
After the initial acquisition of Flickr, Yahoo decided to keep both sites running at the due to the different audiences they attracted. Yahoo Photos focused more on uploading photos to print them, while Flickr was based around a social community that just wanted to share and discuss photos. Apparently, the social approach won out. Flickr has gained 22 percent more visitors in the last year, according to Hitwise, while Yahoo Photos has suffered a 60 percent loss in visitors.
Yahoo plans to offer Yahoo Photos users options for migrating their photos in June, with the site to be permanently closed a few months later. Oddly enough, Yahoo will not be pushing Flickr as the sole replacement for Yahoo Photos. Kodak Gallery, Photobucket, Shutterfly and Snapfish will all be recommended, and users will be able to transfer their photos to any one of them in a single click.
Fujifilm S5 Pro Review at PhotographyBLOG
PhotographyBLOG has a review of the Fujifilm S5 Pro and writes, “Overall the Fujifilm S5 Pro displayed an amazing lack of noise with regard to its images – delivering a performance at ISO 1600 that would be comparable to that from lesser cameras at ISO 400, with ISO 3200 equivalent to the kind of results normally seen at ISO 800. Which means, if you’re indeed shooting in low light without flash, as most social photographers worth their salt prefer working these days, the Fujifilm S5 Pro is capable of delivering results that are bang ‘on the money’.”
